Alstom Invests $55M+ in Newark, Delaware Site to Maintain Amtrak NextGen Acela Fleet

Alstom has purchased an approximately 20-acre property in Newark, Delaware, where it will build a dedicated maintenance and support facility for Amtrak’s NextGen Acela high-speed trainsets—an investment the company values at more than $55 million and a workforce of about 100 jobs once the site is fully operational.

Announced June 4, 2026, the project is timed to the long-term Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA) Alstom holds with Amtrak for the new Northeast Corridor fleet, which was assembled at Alstom’s Hornell, New York, campus. The Newark location was chosen in part for direct access to Northeast Corridor trackage, allowing trainsets to move on and off the property with a rail spur rather than depending solely on highway logistics for heavy components.

Plans call for a shop large enough to service two trainsets indoors at once, plus a third outdoor track for stabling. An existing warehouse on the site will be adapted for parts distribution and offices, consolidating functions currently handled from nearby New Castle that support the first-generation Acela. Roughly 50 employees are expected to transfer from the existing location, with about 50 new hires added as NextGen support ramps up. Opening is targeted for summer 2028.

Amtrak and Delaware state and county officials welcomed the project as both a reliability investment for the busiest passenger corridor in the country and a local economic development win. For riders, the practical payoff is less dramatic than a new timetable—but no less important: high-speed fleets only deliver when spares, inspections, and heavy repairs stay ahead of daily utilization.

As NextGen Acela consists continue to enter Northeast Corridor service through the late 2020s, Newark will join Hornell and Amtrak’s own facilities as a key node in keeping America’s premium high-speed product available every day.
