America 250 Locomotive Celebration Set for August 28-30 at North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer

The North Carolina Transportation Museum, Trains Magazine, and White River Productions have announced the America 250 Locomotive Celebration, a three-day gathering of specially painted semiquincentennial locomotives scheduled for August 28–30, 2026, at the museum’s historic Spencer Shops campus in Spencer, North Carolina.

The event is billed as the first and only public assembly of commemorative locomotives painted by Class I, short-line, and passenger railroads to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. Organizers expect a striking display of red-, white-, and blue-liveried units posed against the iconic Bob Julian Roundhouse—the largest surviving roundhouse in North America.

Event Highlights

Daily hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors will find rotating locomotive displays on the roundhouse turntable, photo opportunities with equipment grouped by railroad, and train rides around the museum grounds pulled by a museum diesel. Each day will feature a different lineup as locomotives are repositioned, giving returning visitors a fresh experience.

Night photography sessions, sponsored and coordinated by Railfan & Railroad Magazine (a White River Productions title), are scheduled for the evenings of August 28 and 29 from 7:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. These sessions are ticketed separately.

Confirmed and Expected Participants

Norfolk Southern’s America 250 SD70ACe No. 2026, The Lady Liberty, has been confirmed among the locomotives expected to appear. Officials state that a complete roster of participating units from Class I, short-line, and passenger carriers will be released as confirmations are finalized.

The gathering is intended to evoke the spirit of the July 31, 1975, Trains Magazine photograph of Bicentennial locomotives assembled at the Belt Railway of Chicago’s Clearing Yard—an event closed to the public. This time, ticketed visitors will have full access.

Historical Context at Spencer

The America 250 Locomotive Celebration continues a tradition of major locomotive gatherings at the museum. In 2012 the Norfolk Southern Heritage Locomotive Family Portrait drew more than 4,000 visitors from 39 states and several countries. Two years later, Streamliners at Spencer attracted attendees from 41 states and abroad to see 26 historic streamlined locomotives. Museum Director Kelly Alexander noted that the new event “continues that tradition and gives the American public a chance to witness a piece of living railroad history.”

Trains Editor Bill Stephens said the celebration will recreate the memorable 1975 Trains photo “but unlike that event… will allow everyone with a paid admission ticket to get in on the fun.” White River Productions owner and publisher Kevin EuDaly added that the gathering offers “a rare opportunity to see a tremendous group of specially painted locomotives in one place.”

Tickets and Practical Information

Tickets go on sale to museum members on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, and to the general public on Tuesday, July 21, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Pricing (plus North Carolina sales tax) includes one-, two-, and three-day passes, with separate pricing for the night photo sessions. Members receive a modest discount on base ticket prices. This concentrated display of America 250 locomotives at one of the nation’s premier railroad museums is expected to produce some of the most memorable rail photography of the semiquincentennial year. As additional units are confirmed, the event’s already strong appeal for railfans and the general public is likely to grow.
