Railroads have played a crucial role in shaping the history and culture of many regions across the United States, and Oregon is no exception. With its rich tapestry of scenic landscapes and profound historical significance, Oregon possesses several railroad museums that offer insights into the state’s transportation heritage.

These museums not only preserve artifacts and railcars but also narrate stories from a bygone era when railroads were the lifeline of trade and movement. Here's a deep dive into some of the most fascinating railroad museums in Oregon, each contributing uniquely to the preservation of this pivotal aspect of industrial history.

Canby Depot Museum

Owned by the Canby Historical Society this museum is situated within the town's restored Southern Pacific depot. Inside are several historic displays to peruse while a caboose is displayed on the grounds nearby.

Medford Railroad Park

Owned and operated by the Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society the park features a "1 1/2-inch scale live steam train rides, HO scale model layout, displays of full size railroad equipment used in the area, a garden railway (G scale) layout and a working exhibit of Morse telegraphy."

Oregon Rail Heritage Center

Opened on September 22, 2012 and located in Portland, the Oregon Rail Heritage Center serves as a beacon of the city’s railroad legacy. Operated by the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, the museum is instrumental in preserving Portland's locomotive treasures, including three vintage steam locomotives:

  • Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449
  • Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700
  • Oregon Railroad & Navigation (UP) 4-6-2 #197

These majestic machines, which date back to the early 20th century, are lovingly maintained and occasionally operated on special runs, allowing visitors to experience the nostalgia of steam travel firsthand.

The museum boasts a comprehensive collection of railroad artifacts, photographs, and interpretive displays that cover the development of rail transport in the Pacific Northwest. Interactive displays engage visitors of all ages, making it a family-friendly destination. Guided tours provide deeper insights into the mechanical intricacies of the steam engines and the historical context in which they operated.

Train Mountain Railroad Museum

Train Mountain Railroad Museum holds the distinction of being the world’s longest miniature railroad, stretching over 36 miles of track in Chiloquin, Oregon. This museum is uniquely interactive, with a focus on rideable miniature trains that delight enthusiasts and families alike.

The expansive grounds feature numerous model engines and cars, and the museum complex includes historical exhibits and informational displays about the development of railroading in Oregon and beyond. Train Mountain’s dedication to combining educational exhibits with interactive experiences makes it a must-visit for those interested in model railroading.

Overview
