New Haven Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 10, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The New Haven dieselized a passenger railroad that still had to reach Grand Central on third rail and Boston on a Shore Line the wires had stopped short of. Alco built the passenger cabs, sixty DL-109s and twenty-seven PA-1s, and the freight cabs that followed them. Electro-Motive's share was the switchers, thirty GP9s, and sixty FL9s. The last new hoods were General Electric U25Bs in the fall of 1965.

The tables are the all-time road numbers, 558 of them, with the builder's serial and the order or specification beside each batch. A published census of 381 diesels is one year's count. The company history is the New York, New Haven & Hartford. Steam since 1900 is the steam roster. The electric motors, EP and EF, stay on the company page.

EMD order numbers follow Andre Kristopans, and the FL9 orders follow the FL9 page, whose serials match his list. Information compiled October 9, 2026.

Passenger cabs, lightweights, and the FL9s

Wartime passenger power was the Alco DL-109, class DER-1a, sixty units numbered 0700–0759, built from December 1941 through April 1945. They covered the 157 miles between New Haven and Boston in daylight and turned to freight at night. No. 0722 is the Cranberry leaving Boston South Station in the early 1950s, on the company page. The month-by-month split of the same serials is on the DL-109 page. Alco's order numbers for these batches are still open, so the Order column is blank.

The PA-1s, class DER-3a, were the last Alco passenger cabs the New Haven bought: twenty-seven units, 0760–0786, from August 1948 through March 1949. No. 0767 is the September 1948 builder photograph. No. 0773, new in Pullman Green with Dulux Gold, is the circa-1949 portrait. Fairbanks-Morse added ten CPA24-5s, class DER-4, in 1951 and 1952. The first two, 790 and 791, had been FM demonstrators 4801 and 4802.

Two lightweight experiments rode on locomotive frames. Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton RP-210s 3000 and 3001, class EDER-6, works numbers 76109 and 76110, came in October 1956. Fairbanks-Morse P-12-42s 3100 and 3101, class EDER-7, serials 17L1058 and 17L1059, came in January 1957, one at each end of the American Car & Foundry Talgo that ran as the John Quincy Adams. Passengers found the ride rough. The train came off on June 5, 1958. Budd rail diesel cars, and the Roger Williams trainset, are cars and stay off this locomotive count. The 1935 Comet is its own page.

The dual-mode answer was the FL9. Sixty units, 2000–2059, covered third-rail territory into New York and diesel territory east of the wires. Nos. 2000 and 2001 were the Electro-Motive demonstrators, order 3192, January 1957, and they kept those numbers on the New Haven. The next twenty-eight, order 3193, came in July through November 1957. The last thirty, order 3198, came in September through November 1960. The first thirty, class EDER-5, have the 16-cylinder 567C at 1,750 horsepower. The last thirty, class EDER-5a, have the 567D1 at 1,800 horsepower. No. 2044 is the Puritan at Bridgeport.

Thirty FA-1s, then the boosters

Alco's freight cab on the New Haven was the FA-1, class DER-2a, thirty units numbered 0400–0429, all of 1947, in seven serial groups. No. 0401 later became Penn Central 1330 and, after that, Long Island control cab 618. Nos. 0418, 0426, and 0428 became Penn Central 1331, 1332, and 1333. No. 0421 leads the September 11, 1957 freight through New Haven on the company page, and 0401 with 0418 are the units tied down there on August 6, 1965. An FA-FB-FA set laid over at Worcester in May 1962. On February 4, 1969, FA-1 0418 and RS11 1405 were at SHELL interlocking, New Rochelle, already a month into Penn Central operation.

Fifteen FB-1s, class DER-2b, 0450–0464, came in the same year. Three of them reached Penn Central as 3390 (ex-0456), 3391 (ex-0458), and 3392 (ex-0462). Five FB-2s, class DER-2c, 0465–0469, serials 79482–79486, followed in November 1951 and became Penn Central 3393–3397. GP9 1211 and a set of those FB-2s are eastbound at New London on May 29, 1965.

Road switchers, from the RS-1 to the U25B

Alco road switchers began with twelve RS-1s, class DERS-1b, in 1948, then seventeen RS-2s, class DERS-2b, in 1947 and 1948, and forty-five RS-3s, class DERS-2c, numbered 517–561, from August 1950 through January 1952. No. 529 later worked on the Valley Railroad. Nos. 560 and 561 are a second use of those numbers. The first holders had been Fairbanks-Morse H16-44s.

Those H16-44s, class DERS-3, were delivered as 560–569 in November and December 1950 and renumbered 590–599, which is where this roster counts them. A second block, class DERS-6, numbers 1600–1614, came in June and August 1956. The two blocks are the same builder's model and two New Haven classes. Together they are twenty-five locomotives.

Electro-Motive's road switcher was one order: thirty GP9s, 1200–1229, class DERS-4, serials 22110–22139, order 5474, July and August 1956. They became Penn Central 7270–7299. No. 1209 is at Forest Hills in the 1960s with Pennsylvania coaches, and 1211 is the New London freight of May 29, 1965. Alco RS11s 1400–1414, class DERS-5, came in May and June 1956. No. 1405 is the hood beside FA-1 0418 at New Rochelle.

The second-generation hoods are two builders. General Electric U25Bs 2500–2525, class DERS-7, are twenty-six units, October 1964 and October–November 1965. They became Conrail 2660–2669 and 2670–2685. Roger Puta caught a set at Danbury station on July 28, 1968, and Richard Wallin caught former New Haven U25Bs laying over at Maybrook in the early Penn Central months. Alco C425s 2550–2559, class DERS-8, specification 3398, serials 3398-01 through 3398-10, came in December 1964 and January 1965 and became Penn Central 2450–2459, then Conrail. No. 2550 leads the April 1967 shop train at New London, with a pair of U25Bs behind it.

Yard switchers, from the demonstrator to the SW1200s

The oldest diesel in the road-number list is HH600 0900, class DEY-1, serial 68539, July 1931, built as Alco demonstrator 600. Ten more HH600s, class DEY-1a, 0911–0920, followed in April 1937 and May 1938, with a gap in the serials at 69047. Ten HH660s, class DEY-1b, 0921–0930, serials 69222–69231, came in January 1940. Of that block, 0924 became Penn Central 9411.

Between the high-hood groups, General Electric built ten Model Y oil-electrics, class DEY-2, numbers 0901–0910, in the fall of 1936 and January 1937. Nos. 0901–0904 went to the Bangor & Aroostook as 30–33, and 0905 went as 34. They are in this diesel count. The Van Nest boxcabs are electrics and stay with the motors on the company page.

The later yard fleet is Alco and everyone else. Sixty-five S-1s, class DEY-3, fill 0931–0995 from April 1941 through January 1949. Twenty-two S-2s, class DEY-5, fill 0600–0621 in 1944, and the serials of 0608 and 0609 are 72070 and 72714, a break in the sequence. Nineteen 44-ton switchers, class DEY-4, 0800–0818, run from January 1941 through December 1947. Nos. 0800 and 0802 went to the Youghiogheny & Ohio Coal Company. No. 0815 is at the Charles Street Roundhouse in Providence. Ten Lima-Hamilton LS-1200s, class DEY-6, 630–639, serials 9458–9467, came in October through December 1950. Twenty SW1200s, class DEY-7, closed the yard buying on order 4334: 640–649 in January and February 1956, and 650–659 in February and March. They became Penn Central 9180–9189 and 9190–9199, then Conrail 9363–9372 and 9373–9382.
