Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Dates, Tickets & Tips

Published: August 7, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville, Ohio is the Hocking Hills region’s dedicated autumn rail product. Each year the railroad markets October Fall Foliage trains—roughly two-hour round trips toward East Logan through Appalachian Ohio hardwoods, river valley scenery, and local industrial history. For Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton day-trippers, it is one of the state’s easiest leaf-peeping trains.

About the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Based in historic Nelsonville (about 15 minutes from core Hocking Hills attractions), the railway operates heritage excursions on former Hocking Valley corridor. Regular season typically runs Memorial Day weekend into late October; October’s foliage branding is the peak leaf product, with Halloween and holiday trains following. Steam specials appear on selected dates—confirm power for your ticket.

Schedules and fares change. Pick up paper tickets at the depot on arrival (confirmation is not a boarding ticket). Information compiled August 6, 2026.

What the Ride Is Like

The Fall Foliage train is a relaxed, family-friendly valley ride: river and hardwood scenery, canal-era remnants, and a tourist pace that pairs well with a Hocking Hills hiking or cabin weekend. Open-air cars (when available) are popular on mild October days; coaches heat when the weather turns. Soft drinks and food are generally permitted aboard.

Wheelchair capacity is limited on antique equipment—purchase the designated wheelchair ticket and arrive early so crews can board your party comfortably.

Peak Color Notes

Southeast Ohio / Hocking Hills hardwoods often peak from mid-to-late October, with early November still usable in some years. The operator’s inclusion of Nov. 1 reflects that late window—treat it as shoulder color, not a guarantee of peak reds.

What to Expect Onboard

  • About two hours round trip; family tourist pace
  • Open-air option when weather allows; heated coaches as needed
  • Arrive ~30 minutes early (45–60 minutes for wheelchair parties)
  • Paper tickets required at the depot

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance online recommended; October weekends are popular
  • Pair with: Hocking Hills State Park; Old Man’s Cave / Ash Cave area; Columbus weekend base
  • Tickets: October Fall Foliage page

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book mid-to-late October weekends first for color odds
  • Weekday 1 p.m. trains are often quieter
  • Layers for open-air cars and river chill
  • Stay off private property and active track for photos
