Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad Fall Foliage Train Rides (2026): Dates, Tickets & Tips

Published: August 8, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone, Iowa is the Midwest’s high-bridge foliage train: Fraser excursions cross the towering Bass Point Creek High Bridge through the Des Moines River valley as hardwoods turn. There is no single “leaf special” brand for most of the season—regular scenic trains run Thursday through Sunday into October 31, which is the foliage product for planning purposes. Pumpkin Express family trains typically join the calendar on early October weekends.

About the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad

Operated with the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum complex, the Boone & Scenic Valley runs heritage passenger trains on former Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern interurban territory. The signature structure is the roughly 750-foot-long, 156-foot-tall Bass Point Creek High Bridge—one of the most dramatic tourist-railroad crossings in the Midwest. Motive power can include diesel, electric (trolley/interurban equipment when scheduled), and special steam events on select dates; confirm power for your ticket.

What the Ride Is Like

The Fraser train is a leisurely valley ride, not a mountain climb. Cornfields and river-bluff hardwoods give way to the high bridge—the moment everyone films. Coaches are climate-controlled for changeable October weather; picnic-style trains let families bring food aboard on select products. The museum complex rewards early arrival if you want equipment photos and indoor exhibits before boarding.

October weekends mix foliage demand with Pumpkin Express family traffic. Midweek Thursday–Friday trains (when operating) are usually quieter for photography and bridge views.

Peak Color Notes

Central Iowa hardwoods often peak from early to mid-October, with late September still mixed and the final week of October more muted depending on frost. Bridge height puts riders above much of the canopy, so even a good-but-not-peak year still photographs well against the river valley.

What to Expect Onboard

  • About 1 hour 45 minutes round trip at tourist pace
  • High-bridge highlight; stay seated or use designated observation spots as crew directs
  • Arrive early for parking and museum browsing
  • Layers for outdoor time at the depot and any open platforms

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance online at bsvrr.com; October weekends and Pumpkin Express dates sell early
  • Pair with: High Trestle Trail (nearby recreational bridge corridor); Des Moines metro day trip; Iowa food/brewery stops in Boone
  • Related products: Pumpkin Express (patch / family October product); holiday trains later in the year

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book the departure that puts you on the high bridge in good light (afternoon side often preferred—confirm orientation on site)
  • Weekday October trains if crowds matter
  • Camera ready before the bridge; the crossing is relatively short
  • Stay off railroad property and private land for trackside photos
