Amtrak Introduces The Cascades Airo Trainset
Amtrak Introduces The Cascades Airo Trainset
Published: February 15, 2026
By: Adam Burns
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amtrak pulled the curtain back this month on the first trainset in its forthcoming Airo fleet, using Union Station as a stage to preview what the railroad says is a major step forward in comfort, accessibility, and onboard technology. The showcased equipment was configured for the Amtrak Cascades corridor in the Pacific Northwest, where Airo trains are slated to enter service first—linking Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene, Oregon.
The event signals a tangible milestone in Amtrak’s broader fleet modernization push, aimed at replacing decades-old corridor equipment with trainsets designed around today’s expectations: dependable Wi-Fi, plentiful power outlets, easier boarding, and interiors that feel more like a modern intercity environment than a “refreshed” version of the past. Amtrak leadership and partners highlighted Airo as a foundational piece of that transformation, with 83 Airo trainsets planned nationwide in the coming years.
Why Cascades is first—and what happens next
Amtrak says the first Airo trainsets will debut on Amtrak Cascades, with eight trainsets planned for the route and manufacturing expected to wrap up in 2026. In parallel, Amtrak’s rollout plan points to the Northeast Regional as the next major landing spot, with production and testing ramping in 2026 and revenue service targeted for 2027.
Rail industry coverage has noted that the first Cascades Airo set has already been involved in testing—starting at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado, and later on the Northeast Corridor, ahead of broader deployment.
The trainset at a glance: Airo’s core specs
While “Airo” is the brand Amtrak is using for the fleet, the equipment is built around Siemens Mobility’s Venture passenger cars and Charger locomotives, configured as a bidirectional trainset (locomotive on one end, cab control car on the other).
Here are several of the key performance and capacity figures Siemens has published for the Airo/Venture trainset platform:
-
Top speed: up to 125 mph (electric mode), 110 mph (diesel mode), and 60 mph (battery mode)
-
Rated power (maximum): 5,700 hp (4,250 kW)
-
Head-end power: 1,000 kW
-
Maximum tractive effort: 82,000 lbs (365 kN)
-
Passenger capacity (varies by configuration): Economy 286 / 430 seats, Business 49 seats
Siemens also lists baseline car dimensions of roughly 85 feet long and 10 feet 6 inches wide, with design choices aimed at improving circulation and accessibility throughout the consist.
Diesel, electric, and battery capability
One of the most consequential features of the Airo concept is its emphasis on flexibility. Siemens describes the trainsets as capable of operating in diesel mode, in fully electric mode under overhead catenary, and with a hybrid battery component that can reduce emissions and allow limited battery-only operation.
In diesel operation, Siemens points to a proven propulsion package centered on a Cummins QSK95 16-cylinder diesel engine rated at 4,200 hp for the Charger locomotive platform used with these trainsets. For corridors where electrification exists (or where future projects may add it), Siemens notes compatibility with overhead systems including 25 kV / 12.5 kV.
For riders, the propulsion strategy is mostly invisible—until it translates into quieter station departures, smoother acceleration, or reduced diesel exhaust in constrained environments. For Amtrak and state partners, the “multi-power” toolkit is a hedge against the reality that U.S. rail corridors vary widely in infrastructure, station platform heights, and environmental requirements.
Accessibility and boarding
Airo’s accessibility features were a major theme of Amtrak’s preview messaging, and Siemens’ technical sheet provides insight into how the trainsets are intended to handle a mixed landscape of high- and low-platform stops.
Each trainset is designed for level boarding at high platforms, while also carrying multiple onboard wheelchair lifts for low-platform access—listed as at least 8 (and up to 12 depending on configuration). Siemens also notes mobility aid spaces (9–11) and large accessible washrooms with improved maneuvering room, wider door openings, and power-operated doors.
In practice, this matters on corridors like Cascades, where station facilities can differ significantly from city to city. Instead of treating accessibility as a bolt-on feature, the trainset design is intended to make it a normal part of boarding and moving through the train.
Inside The Train
While specifications tell part of the story, the Airo preview was also about showing how these trainsets may feel different from legacy corridor equipment.
Siemens highlights a package of passenger-facing improvements: ergonomic seating, integrated power outlets and USB charging, reading lights, and larger tray tables, along with touchless interior doors and modern HVAC systems designed for thermal and acoustic comfort. An integrated onboard IT backbone supports passenger information systems, CCTV, diagnostics, and internet connectivity.
Amtrak’s own Airo overview frames the fleet around upgraded amenities—comfortable seating, spacious restrooms, and a refreshed food-service concept meant to better match corridor travel patterns.
For Cascades in particular, Amtrak and partners have also emphasized that the new trains will carry a regionally inspired design aesthetic—part of an effort to make state-supported corridors feel distinctive while still delivering a consistent “Amtrak Airo” experience.
Environmental and operational efficiency
Airo is also being marketed as a cleaner, more efficient way to run higher-frequency corridor service. Siemens notes that the diesel engines meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards and cites major reductions in particulate matter and nitrogen oxides relative to older equipment, alongside other efficiency measures like LED lighting, dual-pane windows, and an electrodynamic braking approach that can reuse braking energy to reduce overall fuel consumption.
The Bigger Picture
Amtrak’s Airo preview comes as the company positions 2026 as a pivotal year in a multi-front fleet transition—one that includes new corridor trainsets as well as the next-generation Acela program. In Amtrak’s telling, Airo isn’t just a new train; it’s the standard “building block” for future corridor growth, intended to expand capacity while improving reliability and consistency across multiple routes.
For passengers in the Pacific Northwest, the immediate takeaway is simple: the most visible change to Cascades service in years is finally materializing in steel and glass. The trainset Amtrak showcased in Washington, D.C. is a preview of what riders are expected to see on the Seattle–Portland–Vancouver, B.C.–Eugene corridor first—before the Airo brand begins showing up, train by train, across the wider Amtrak system.
