Delaware River Railroad Excursions
New Jersey "The Polar Express" Train Rides In Phillipsburg!
Published: November 10, 2025
By: Adam Burns
Perched on the banks of the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, Delaware River Railroad Excursions is a beloved heritage railroad that blends rail history, small-town hospitality, and family-friendly entertainment.
Operated by the volunteers of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society, these excursions roll along a historic stretch of track that once moved passengers and freight through the heart of the Delaware Valley.
Today, the trains carry a different cargo—memories—offering seasonal rides, themed events, and the officially licensed The Polar Express train ride that has become a holiday tradition for thousands of families.
A Living Railroad Along the River
The line hugs the Delaware River, taking riders through forested riverbanks, old canal features, and pastoral countryside. You’ll see the landscape that powered the region’s early industries—quarries, mills, and canalways—now serving as a tranquil backdrop for vintage passenger cars and classic locomotives.
On select dates, you may see steam power in action; on others, vintage diesel locomotives lead the way. Either way, the vibe is authentically old-school railroading: friendly conductors, sturdy heavyweight coaches, and the rhythmic sway of the rails.
Beyond the rails themselves, Delaware River Railroad Excursions is a community-powered operation. Volunteers maintain equipment, staff the station, punch tickets, and share stories of the line’s past. Revenue from excursions supports ongoing preservation, so every ticket helps keep this living museum rolling.
Seasonal Rides and Signature Experiences
Throughout the year, the railroad hosts a rotating slate of themed rides that make the most of the scenery and the season. Families come for kid-focused adventures like the Easter Bunny Train or The Great Pumpkin Train.
The Ol’ Susquehanna Mine experience lets kids try gemstone “panning” as part of a day out on the train. In late summer and fall, the River Train and special-event runs pair scenic views with stops for corn mazes or other seasonal attractions. Adults find a lot to love too, from laid-back, scenic cruises to special wine-focused trips in partnership with local vineyards.
But come late November, the calendar revolves around a single star: The Polar Express Train Ride.
The Polar Express
Delaware River Railroad Excursions is home to an official production of The Polar Express—the only kind that can use the beloved story elements, soundtrack, and characters inspired by the Warner Bros. film and Chris Van Allsburg’s classic book. It’s not just a holiday train; it’s an immersive show on rails that unfolds as your vintage coach rolls through the winter landscape along the Delaware River.
Here’s What You Can Expect
Golden Ticket moments: Kids (and kids at heart) bring their Golden Tickets and meet the Conductor, who makes the rounds to punch each one, just like in the story. It’s a small touch that delivers big smiles and often becomes the day’s favorite photo.
Hot chocolate and treats: Dancing “chefs” serve rich hot chocolate and cookies at your seat. The service and music are choreographed to capture the energy of the film’s famous Hot Chocolate scene.
Storytime and songs: The narration of The Polar Express weaves through the trip, accompanied by a soundtrack of familiar tunes. With caroling and singalongs, this is a show as much as a train ride.
A visit from Santa: At the “North Pole,” Santa boards to greet each child and present a keepsake sleigh bell—the “first gift of Christmas.” Kids are encouraged to believe—and to listen for that clear, bright ring.
Pajamas encouraged: Families often arrive in matching pajamas, which adds to the ambiance and makes for adorable photos. Warm layers help, as the experience includes time on the platform.
Keepsakes and photos: You’ll find themed souvenirs, photo spots, and plenty of chances to capture the moment, from the station platform to the glow-lit interiors of the cars.
Timing, seating, and what to know before you book
The Polar Express typically runs from late November through December, with multiple departures on peak days. Trips are designed to be family-friendly in length, generally around an hour. Exact schedules, seat maps, and availability vary by season, so booking early is wise—popular dates can sell out well in advance.
Delaware River Railroad Excursions uses historic passenger cars, and seating is generally reserved by car and seat or by section, depending on the year’s configuration.
Cars are heated, and staff make every effort to ensure a comfortable ride in winter conditions. If your party wants to sit together, book under a single reservation, and double-check the seating map before checkout.
Practical Tips For a Smooth Visit
Arrive early: Parking, ticket pickup, and boarding lines move faster if you arrive 30–45 minutes before departure. Holiday weekends can be especially busy.
Dress for the weather: You’ll be outdoors on the platform before boarding and after arrival. Pajamas are festive, but consider layers, hats, and gloves.
Book only via official channels: The Polar Express is a sought-after event. Purchase tickets only through the railroad’s official website or authorized partners to avoid third-party scams.
Why Families Return Year After Year
The Polar Express here succeeds because it balances showmanship with sincerity. Volunteers and cast members bring heart to the performance, and the setting—the real steel, the historic cars, and the dark river rolling alongside—is cinematic in its own right. Kids delight in seeing the story come to life, while adults appreciate the craftsmanship and hospitality that make the evening feel easy and magical.
The experience also honors the region’s rail heritage. Your ticket doesn’t just buy a show; it supports preservation work that keeps historic equipment operational and trains accessible to future generations. When a child meets a conductor in a real uniform or feels the weight of a brass sleigh bell, they’re connecting with a living tradition.
More Than A Holiday Ride
If The Polar Express draws you in, consider coming back in another season to experience the railroad’s other excursions. Spring and summer rides showcase the river’s greenery and wildlife; fall trips unfold in a tapestry of color. Themed events rotate, but the core is constant: a scenic ride, friendly staff, and the charm of travel at human speed.
Planning your trip
Delaware River Railroad Excursions departs from the Phillipsburg, New Jersey waterfront. Check the official website for dates, fares, parking information, and real-time updates; schedules can change due to weather or operational needs, especially in winter. The railroad’s social channels also share event news, behind-the-scenes peeks, and last-minute ticket releases.
Whether you’re local to New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania or planning a seasonal day trip from farther afield, the combination of riverside scenery, historic railroading, and polished holiday theater makes this a standout family outing.
From the first whistle to the last ring of the bell, The Polar Express Train Ride at Delaware River Railroad Excursions delivers the kind of shared memory that becomes a tradition—and a reason to believe—year after year.
