An Indiana Christmas Train Ride From Pleasant Lake!

Published: November 20, 2025

By: Adam Burns

The Indiana Rail Experience (IRE) is one of the newest and most exciting heritage rail programs in the Midwest, yet its roots extend deep into American railroad history. Operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society (FWRHS)—the same organization responsible for restoring and maintaining the legendary Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765—the Indiana Rail Experience offers a broad slate of excursions that blend immersive history, beautiful landscapes, and hands-on educational programming. Based primarily on the tracks of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad, the program has quickly become a regional favorite, drawing passengers from across Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

Although the Indiana Rail Experience only launched in 2022, it has grown rapidly, hosting steam excursions, themed events, fall color tours, and railroad skills sessions. Yet among its many offerings, few have captured the public’s imagination like the Indiana Christmas Train, a festive holiday experience that transforms the railway into a nostalgic celebration of lights, music, and Yuletide adventure.

A New Railroad Tradition with Historic Roots

The Indiana Rail Experience exists thanks to a unique partnership. For decades, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has been a leader in railroad preservation, best known for operating Nickel Plate Road No. 765 in mainline excursion service.

The Indiana Northeastern Railroad (INER)—a modern 130-mile short line serving northeastern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan—has maintained a strong interest in heritage rail operations and recognized the economic and cultural potential of hosting special trains.

When INER offered significant access to its rural and scenic lines for the new program, the Indiana Rail Experience was born. The partnership created an opportunity rarely found today: a long, continuous railroad corridor suitable for long-distance, high-quality excursion trains powered by both vintage diesels and, at select times, by the iconic steam locomotive No. 765.

The line itself has deep historical significance. Much of today’s INER system originated as a component of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway (New York Central) and the Wabash Railroad's 4th District", serving small towns, agricultural communities, and regional industries. The tracks showcase rolling farmland, tranquil lakes, forested hollows, and small-town depots—settings ideally suited for immersive historical excursions. The IRE has brought these landscapes back to life for the public, recapturing the romance of Midwestern railroading.

Excursions Throughout the Year

While this article focuses on the Indiana Christmas Train, a broader overview of IRE’s annual programming helps illustrate why the program has become such a sensation.

Steam in the Valley

The premier event of the year brings Nickel Plate Road No. 765 to the region, offering long-distance steam excursions reminiscent of the famed “Cannonball” and “Nickel Plate Limited” of decades past. These trips often operate between Angola, Edon, Hillsdale, or other historic towns, drawing thousands of visitors.

Wine & Whiskey Trains

Partnering with local wineries, distilleries, and breweries, these adults-only excursions offer tastings onboard vintage railcars, complete with live music and an atmospheric nighttime ride through rural Indiana.

Fall Color Trains

Autumn is one of the most scenic times on the INER system, and the Indiana Rail Experience capitalizes on this with popular fall foliage tours, the Autumn Limited. Riders enjoy sweeping views of brilliant red, gold, and orange forests from restored coaches.

Hand-On “Railroad Camp” and Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Educational programming allows guests to explore the mechanical and historical aspects of railroading. Volunteers teach everything from basic railroad operations to restoration skills.

All of these offerings set the stage for the program’s signature holiday attraction—one that has quickly become a cherished seasonal tradition.

The Indiana Christmas Train

The Indiana Christmas Train is the Indiana Rail Experience’s (IRE) flagship holiday attraction, offering an enchanting and family-friendly seasonal celebration. Drawing inspiration from traditional Christmas railway experiences, the train combines festive décor, holiday storytelling, seasonal music, and a charming rural backdrop to create an unforgettable journey.

A Festive Journey Through Rural Indiana

The trip typically departs from the Steuben County town of Pleasant Lake, though boarding locations may vary year to year depending on operating schedules. Once passengers are aboard, the coaches—often restored heavyweights from the mid-20th century—come alive with twinkling lights, garlands, wreaths, and cheerful Christmas displays. Holiday music fills the cars, setting a joyful tone as the train begins its trip.

As the Indiana Christmas Train rolls across quiet farmland and wooded landscapes, passengers experience the kind of old-fashioned holiday atmosphere rarely found today. Twilight departures are particularly magical: with darkness settling over the countryside, the interior of the train glows warm and bright against the winter night.

Onboard Experience and Family Activities

The IRE puts a strong emphasis on creating a wholesome, interactive environment. Families and children remain at the heart of the excursion, and every moment of the journey is designed to build anticipation and joy.

• Holiday Storytelling

Volunteers and costumed actors read classic Christmas tales, often evoking “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” or original stories created just for the event. These readings are lively and engaging, helping young passengers fully immerse themselves in the magic.

• Visits from Santa Claus

As the train heads down the line, Santa makes his grand arrival, visiting each car to greet passengers, pose for photos, and hand out small gifts or keepsakes. Children often consider this the highlight of their trip.

• Hot Cocoa and Treats

No holiday train ride would be complete without a warm beverage and something sweet. The onboard staff typically serves hot chocolate, cookies, candy canes, or other seasonal treats. These small comforts add to the cozy ambiance of the excursion.

• Festive Characters

Depending on the year, riders may encounter elves, conductors in vintage Christmas attire, or other holiday characters who entertain passengers and lead sing-alongs.

Historic Equipment at Its Best

One of the most charming aspects of the Indiana Christmas Train is that it is often operated with authentic vintage railroad equipment. Restored cars of PRR, Santa Fe, Burlington, Nickel Plate Road, Union Pacific, Norfolk & Western, and others offer a first-class experience many heritage railroads cannot match.

Although the Indiana Christmas Train is generally powered by Nickel Plate SD9 #358 rather than steam, the presence of No. 765 nearby—and its occasional appearance during winter events—adds an unmistakable gravitas to the holiday season. Even when not operating, the locomotive often becomes a centerpiece photo subject when on display.

A Community-Centered Holiday Tradition

The Indiana Rail Experience has made community engagement a cornerstone of its holiday programming. Local organizations, vendors, and businesses frequently participate in the Indiana Christmas Train festivities, creating a broader seasonal event that goes beyond the train ride itself.

Small towns along the line often decorate their streets, host markets, or offer dining specials for visitors. This cooperation reflects the Indiana Rail Experience’s broader mission: to use railroad preservation not only as an educational tool, but also as an engine for regional economic development.

Since launching, the Indiana Christmas Train has quickly become one of the area’s most popular winter attractions, with many departures selling out well in advance. Families return year after year, establishing it as a new Midwest holiday tradition.

Why the Indiana Christmas Train Matters

Railroad holiday excursions have experienced a nationwide surge in popularity, but the Indiana Rail Experience brings something unique to the table: a deeply authentic environment built on real history, operated by dedicated volunteers, and hosted on a living, breathing short line railroad. The Indiana Christmas Train embodies the spirit of Midwestern heritage railroading while delivering an imaginative, family-centered event.

Its success also supports the larger mission of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. Revenue earned during the holiday season helps fund restoration, educational programming, and the ongoing operation of Nickel Plate Road No. 765—one of the most impressive historic locomotives still running in the United States.

Conclusion

In just a few short seasons, the Indiana Rail Experience has established itself as one of the premier heritage rail programs in the Midwest, offering rich history, seasonal charm, and immersive excursions across a picturesque regional corridor. Among its many offerings, the Indiana Christmas Train stands out as a heartwarming celebration of holiday traditions, storytelling, community spirit, and vintage railroading.

For families seeking a magical winter outing—or railfans hoping to experience classic rail equipment in a festive setting—the Indiana Christmas Train provides an unforgettable journey. As the IRE continues to grow, its holiday excursions promise to become a cherished tradition for generations to come.  To learn more about this holiday experience please click here to visit the IRE's website.
