Iowa, often celebrated for its picturesque landscapes and rolling hills, has become an unsung hero in the world of American viticulture. The state not only boasts a burgeoning wine industry but also offers unique experiences such as wine by rail aboard the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, where passengers can sip wines while enjoying the scenic beauty of the countryside. In this immersive experience, passengers embark on a journey that combines the delights of wine tasting with the nostalgia of a leisurely train ride.

Before delving into the Boone & Scenic Valley's offerings, it's essential to understand the burgeoning wine culture in Iowa. In recent decades, Iowa has seen an impressive rise in its wine industry, with over 100 wineries scattered across the state.

The growth is largely attributed to the development of cold-hardy grape varieties that can withstand the harsh Midwest winters. Varieties such as Frontenac, La Crescent, and Marquette have become staples in the state's wine production.

The wine industry not only contributes to Iowa's economy but also enhances its tourism appeal. Wine festivals, vineyard tours, and wine tasting events are increasingly popular, drawing visitors from within the state and beyond.

Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad

The Boone & Scenic Valley is a heritage railroad located in Boone, Iowa, offering a unique glimpse into the rich history of American railroading while providing scenic train rides across the picturesque landscape of the central Iowa region. Operated by the non-profit organization, the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum, it serves as both an educational and recreational attraction, drawing railway enthusiasts and tourists alike.

Founded in 1983, the B&SV was established to preserve the treasured legacy of Iowa's railway history. It showcases a remarkable collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock, some dating back to the early 20th century. Among its noteworthy engines is the Chinese-built steam locomotive, the JS8419, which provides an authentic steam train experience during certain times of the year.

The scenic excursions typically feature a journey that spans approximately 15 miles of former Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern - a once successful electrified interurban - offering passengers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, including traversing over the iconic Bass Point Creek High Bridge, which stands as one of the largest single-track railroad bridges in the United States.

Seasonal excursions include the popular Pumpkin Express in the fall and the dazzling Santa Express during the holiday season, enhancing the charm of the rides.  The railroad does not host official wine tasting experiences.  However, their popular "Wolf Dinner Train" and "Wolf Lunch Train" - operating on Saturdays from May through October - offer guests house red, white, and sparkling wines to enjoy with their meals.

In addition to its scenic train rides, the railroad boasts a museum that displays a variety of railway artifacts and exhibits, enriching visitors' understanding of the impact railroads had on Iowa's development.

Overall, the B&SV serves as a delightful destination, combining historical preservation with the natural beauty of Iowa, making it an appealing attraction for visitors of all ages who wish to relive the nostalgia of rail travel.

Conclusion

Wine tasting trains present a unique blend of tradition, elegance, and sensory delight. Offering a remarkable way to explore Iowa’s wine culture while enjoying the state's natural beauty, these experiences captivate spirits and palettes alike.

Whether you are a wine enthusiast eager to explore new frontiers, a tourist seeking a unique travel experience, or someone who simply wants to enjoy wines in a charming setting, the Boone & Scenic Valley provide an experience that is as enriching as it is enjoyable.

With each sip and every mile traveled, passengers find themselves rooted in the rich tapestry of Iowa’s wine legacy—making memories on the rails that are sure to last a lifetime.
