Norfolk Southern unveiled its latest locomotive in the "Landmark Series" on March 24, 2026; ES44AC No. 8183 "Chicago." The unit, fourth in the series, follows the railroad's three other examples in the series; ES44AC 8184 "Altoona," SD70ACe 1230 "Birmingham," and SD70ACe 1231 "Atlanta." The railroad stated this latest locomotive "honors the people and places—like Chicago—that helped build America and shape our railroad’s story. The locomotive is a rolling tribute to the communities—and our railroaders—who keep America moving."
An aerial view from Norfolk Southern's official unveiling of ES44AC #8383, "Chicago," the latest locomotive in the company's Landmark Series.Norfolk Southern’s “Landmark Series” represents one of the railroad’s newest and most symbolic locomotive initiatives, blending modern motive power with a tribute to the cities and regions that have shaped both the company and the nation’s rail network. Introduced in late 2025, the series reflects a broader trend among Class I railroads to use specially painted locomotives as rolling ambassadors of corporate identity, heritage, and community engagement.
The concept is straightforward but meaningful: each locomotive is named after a historically significant American city tied to Norfolk Southern’s system and to the broader development of U.S. commerce. These cities are not chosen at random; rather, they represent key hubs of industry, transportation, and economic growth that have helped define the railroad’s 19,500-mile network across 22 states and the District of Columbia.
Unlike NS’s earlier and widely celebrated Heritage Fleet—which debuted in 2012 and honored predecessor railroads with historically accurate paint schemes—the Landmark Series shifts the focus from corporate lineage to geographic and economic influence. In doing so, it broadens the narrative from railroad history alone to the communities that sustain and benefit from rail transportation.
The first two locomotives in the series, “Birmingham” and “Atlanta,” were unveiled in November 2025 after being painted at the railroad’s famed Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania. These units, built on modern six-axle freight platforms (SD70ACEs), immediately entered active service. They were initially showcased on a special executive train tied to a charitable event in Atlanta, demonstrating the dual role envisioned for the series: both public engagement and everyday freight operations.

Operationally, Landmark Series locomotives are not confined to ceremonial duties. They are fully integrated into Norfolk Southern’s fleet, handling regular freight assignments across the system while also leading inspection and business trains when required. This ensures maximum visibility across the railroad’s territory, allowing the locomotives to serve as moving tributes encountered by employees, customers, and the public alike.
Aesthetically, while not as historically rigid as the Heritage units, Landmark Series locomotives feature distinctive graphics and bold lettering that prominently display the honored city’s name. The designs emphasize modern branding while still conveying a sense of pride and place. Norfolk Southern has described these locomotives as “rolling tributes” to the communities that drive economic activity and keep the national supply chain moving.
Beyond their visual appeal, the series carries a deeper corporate message. Norfolk Southern leadership has emphasized that the chosen cities represent vital economic centers—places where railroads have historically enabled industry, trade, and population growth. By highlighting these locations, the railroad underscores its ongoing role as a critical infrastructure provider in the U.S. economy.
The Landmark Series is also notable for its timing. Arriving more than a decade after the Heritage Fleet, it signals a continuation of Norfolk Southern’s investment in storytelling through its locomotive fleet. While the Heritage units celebrated the past, the Landmark Series connects that legacy to the present and future, focusing on the living communities that continue to rely on rail service.
As additional units are introduced—each expected to feature a different city—the Landmark Series is poised to grow into a recognizable and evolving part of Norfolk Southern’s public image. Much like the Heritage Fleet before it, the series will likely become a favorite among rail enthusiasts while simultaneously serving as a powerful symbol of the railroad’s enduring connection to the regions it serves.
