Strasburg Rail Road
Train Rides On The Strasburg Rail Road (2026)
Published: April 12, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Few railroads in North America can claim the longevity, authenticity, and continued relevance of the Strasburg Rail Road. Nestled in the rolling farmland of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this remarkable line is widely recognized as America’s oldest continuously operating railroad, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience genuine steam-era railroading in the 21st century.
Unlike many heritage operations that were reconstructed or revived decades after abandonment, the Strasburg Rail Road has operated—continuously—since its founding in the early 19th century. Today, it combines historic preservation, working railroad operations, and a robust calendar of excursions that draw families, rail enthusiasts, and tourists from around the world.

Early History and Founding (1832–1900)
The Strasburg Rail Road was chartered in 1832 during a pivotal moment in American transportation history. At the time, canals dominated freight movement, and the nearby Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad threatened to bypass the town of Strasburg entirely.
To maintain economic relevance, local business leaders secured a charter from the Pennsylvania legislature to build a short connecting railroad. Construction progressed quickly, and by 1837 the line was in operation—initially powered by horse-drawn cars before transitioning to steam locomotives in the 1850s.
Throughout the 19th century, the railroad functioned primarily as a freight and passenger feeder line, linking Strasburg with the larger rail network. Ownership changed hands several times, but the line remained an important local artery for agricultural products, milling operations, and regional commerce.
Decline and Survival (1900–1958)
Like many shortline railroads, Strasburg faced mounting challenges in the early 20th century. The rise of electric streetcars and automobiles dramatically reduced passenger traffic, while trucking began eroding freight revenues.
By the 1950s, the railroad was on the brink of abandonment. Declining business, storm damage, and regulatory complications left the line financially unstable. In 1958, the owners filed for abandonment—a move that would have ended more than a century of continuous operation.
However, in a remarkable turn of events, a group of dedicated rail enthusiasts and local investors stepped in to save the line. Their successful purchase of the railroad in November 1958 marked the beginning of a new chapter—one that would transform Strasburg into a pioneer of the modern heritage railroad movement.
Birth of a Tourist Railroad (1959–Present)
Tourist operations began almost immediately in January 1959, making Strasburg one of the earliest examples of a preserved steam railroad in the United States.
Within a year, steam locomotives returned to the line, and the railroad quickly gained national attention. Its relatively short route—approximately 4.5 miles each way—proved ideal for scenic excursions, while its location in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country provided a picturesque backdrop.
Over the decades, the Strasburg Rail Road has evolved into a world-class preservation and operations facility, featuring:
-
A fleet of operational steam locomotives
-
Meticulously restored passenger cars
-
One of the most respected railroad mechanical shops in North America
-
Ongoing freight operations connecting with Norfolk Southern Railway at Leaman Place Junction
The railroad also plays a key role in preserving rail history, contributing expertise to restoration projects across the country.
The Core Excursion Experience
At the heart of the Strasburg Rail Road is its standard steam train excursion, a 45-minute round trip from Strasburg to Paradise, Pennsylvania, and back.
Pulled by authentic steam locomotives, the train travels through more than 2,500 acres of farmland, much of it still worked by Amish farmers.
Passengers can choose from several seating options:
-
Coach Class: Traditional wooden or upholstered seating
-
Open-Air Cars: Popular during warmer months for unobstructed views
-
First Class: Parlor-style seating with enhanced comfort
-
Dining Cars: Full meal service aboard historic rolling stock
This variety allows the railroad to appeal equally to casual visitors and serious rail enthusiasts.
Seasonal and Signature Excursions
While the standard excursion forms the backbone of operations, Strasburg Rail Road’s true strength lies in its diverse calendar of themed and seasonal experiences. Rather than listing every date, the following highlights its most popular and recurring offerings throughout the year.
Spring: Renewal and Family Events
Spring marks the beginning of the busy season, with family-oriented events and themed rides.
Easter Bunny Train & Easter Eggstravaganza
One of the most popular spring attractions is the Easter Bunny Train, where children ride alongside a costumed Easter Bunny and receive treats during the journey.
Complementing this is the Easter Eggstravaganza, typically held over multiple weekends in late March and early April, featuring egg hunts, family activities, and themed rides.
Spring Excursions and Early Season Rides
As the countryside comes alive, regular excursions resume full schedules, offering ideal conditions for photography and sightseeing.
Summer: Peak Season and Signature Experiences
Summer represents the railroad’s busiest period, with a mix of family attractions, dining trains, and immersive experiences.
Day Out With Thomas™
One of the most recognizable events is “Day Out With Thomas,” featuring a full-size operating Thomas the Tank Engine. In 2026, the event is scheduled for:
- June 12–14 and June 19–21
- September 11–13 and September 18–20
This event draws thousands of families and is among the railroad’s largest annual attractions.
Dining and Adult-Oriented Experiences
Strasburg has developed a strong lineup of premium excursions geared toward adults:
-
Wine & Cheese Train: Wine tastings in a first-class setting
-
Whiskey on the Rails: Curated whiskey experiences
-
Dinner on the Rails: Multi-course dining aboard historic cars
-
The Elegant Express: Fine dining with Edwardian-era ambiance
These offerings highlight the railroad’s ability to blend historic atmosphere with modern hospitality.
Murder Mystery Train
Another standout is the Murder Mystery Train, an interactive theatrical experience where passengers participate in solving a staged crime.
This excursion has become increasingly popular as immersive entertainment continues to grow in demand.
Fall: Scenic Beauty and Harvest Season
Autumn is widely regarded as one of the best times to ride the Strasburg Rail Road. The surrounding farmland and countryside take on vibrant fall colors, creating ideal conditions for scenic excursions and photography.
Seasonal offerings often include:
-
Harvest-themed rides
-
Expanded dining experiences
-
Continued runs of popular summer excursions
The September return of “Day Out With Thomas” also extends the family-focused programming into early fall.
Winter and Holidays: A Festive Transformation
During the holiday season, the Strasburg Rail Road transforms into a winter wonderland.
Christmas Trains
Holiday offerings typically include:
- Santa’s Paradise Express
- The Night Before Christmas Train
- Christmas Feast with Mrs. Claus
These excursions combine storytelling, seasonal décor, and festive treats, making them a favorite among families.
Winterfest and Off-Season Events
In early 2026, the railroad continues operations with Winterfest events and themed rides, ensuring year-round activity despite colder weather.
Behind-the-Scenes Experiences
In addition to train rides, Strasburg offers unique opportunities to engage with railroad operations:
-
Mechanical Shop Tours: Explore one of the nation’s premier restoration facilities
-
Hostling Tours: Observe how steam locomotives are prepared for service
-
In-Cab Experiences: Ride alongside the engineer in the locomotive cab
These experiences provide a deeper understanding of steam-era railroading and appeal strongly to enthusiasts.
Significance in Preservation and Railroading
The Strasburg Rail Road is far more than a tourist attraction—it is a cornerstone of railroad preservation in the United States.
Its significance includes:
-
Continuous operation since 1832
-
Early leadership in heritage railroad tourism
-
A major center for locomotive and rolling stock restoration
-
Ongoing freight service maintaining its status as a common carrier
Few railroads successfully combine historical authenticity, operational relevance, and public accessibility as effectively as Strasburg.
For nearly two centuries, the Strasburg Rail Road has adapted to changing times while preserving its historic character. From its origins as a shortline connector to its modern role as a premier heritage railroad, it stands as a living testament to the enduring appeal of rail travel.
Today, whether riding behind a steam locomotive through Amish farmland, enjoying a fine dining experience onboard a vintage car, or attending a festive holiday excursion, visitors to Strasburg are not simply observing history—they are participating in it.
With its extensive 2026 calendar of seasonal events and signature excursions, the railroad continues to offer one of the most authentic and engaging steam rail experiences anywhere in the world.
