Wisconsin Pizza Train Rides
Wisconsin Pizza Train Rides
Published: February 15, 2026
By: Adam Burns
In the piney lake country of northwestern Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad (WGN) has built a reputation for turning an old branch line into something families can actually use—not as a museum behind a fence, but as a living, rolling experience. Based in Trego/Spooner country, WGN operates excursion trains on a former Chicago & North Western route, pairing classic passenger cars with the kind of onboard hospitality that makes rail travel feel special again.
Among its lineup, one trip stands out as a simple, crowd-pleasing “starter” ride for kids and first-timers: the Family Pizza Train—two hours of Northwoods views, a stop on a tall trestle, and a personal pizza baked right onboard.
Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad
WGN has been operating since 1997, running on track between Spooner and the Hayward area, with passenger service that commonly features stops like Springbrook depending on the excursion. While many visitors know the railroad for its dining trains and the widely touted overnight Bed & Breakfast train, the bigger story is how WGN blends preservation with practicality: it’s a tourist railroad, yes, but it also has freight-related work (including local switching) that helps keep the rails viable.
That “working railroad” energy shows up in the experience. You’re not just boarding a static display—you’re stepping onto equipment that’s actively used, maintained, staffed, and dispatched on a real schedule. And because the setting is the Northwoods, the scenery does a lot of the heavy lifting: deep woods, open farm fields, and water—especially the Namekagon River corridor, part of the larger St. Croix National Scenic Riverway system.
What the Family Pizza Train is
At its core, the Pizza Train is WGN’s most family-friendly, least “fussy” dining excursion: casual food, relaxed pacing, and just enough structure to make it feel like an event.
Duration: about 2 hours.
What you see: a mix of farm fields, deep woods, the Namekagon River, and a stop at the Bean Creek Trestle—a highlight for photos and for that “we went somewhere” feeling kids love.
What’s included: your ticket covers a personal-size pizza and your first beverage (soda or bottled water).
Pizza choices: typically pepperoni, sausage, or cheese, baked fresh in the dining car while you roll through the woods.
That last detail is the secret sauce. A lot of “food trains” feel like you’re eating near the railroad—boxed meals, pre-plate service, concessions. Here, the pizza is part of the show: it’s made as you ride, served warm, and timed to the trip. WGN even notes that additional beverages are available onboard (from the bar), which helps groups tailor the outing for adults while keeping the ride squarely kid-forward.
Seating and the family-friendly setup
WGN’s brochure spells out a smart seating approach for mixed group sizes:
- Private dining compartments are available for families of 6 or fewer (great for birthdays, grandparents with kids, or anyone who wants a little buffer).
- Traditional dining-car seating is used for larger parties, often at adjacent tables.
That flexibility matters because it keeps the vibe upbeat and manageable—parents can corral little ones without feeling like they’re interrupting a formal dinner service, and larger groups can still ride together.
Accessibility is also addressed: the brochure notes wheelchair access by advance arrangement. (As with most heritage operations, it’s worth planning ahead because access often depends on which cars are in the consist that day.)
Schedule and pricing snapshot
Because excursion schedules can change by season, WGN publishes both a ride page and an annual brochure. On the current Pizza Train listing, prices are shown as:
-
Adult (13+): $42
-
Child (2–12): $34
For 2026, the brochure lays out the pattern clearly:
-
Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. from January 10 – October 31, 2026
-
Tuesday–Friday at 11:30 a.m. added in peak summer (June 16 – August 29, 2026)
That “extra midweek trains in summer” detail is useful for planning a vacation week—if you’re staying in the Hayward/Spooner area, you can fit the Pizza Train in without sacrificing a weekend slot.
The Ride
A good family excursion has to land the basics: easy boarding, predictable timing, and enough moments that feel like “chapters” so kids don’t melt down halfway through. The Pizza Train has those beats built in:
-
Boarding and settling in
You get the fun of stepping into vintage passenger equipment—big windows, classic interiors, and that old-fashioned “we’re traveling” atmosphere.
-
Pizza served early enough to keep everyone happy
WGN describes the pizzas being baked fresh in the dining car during the ride, which naturally anchors the first half of the trip around the meal.
-
Scenic variety, not just endless trees
The route mixes open fields with deep woods and river views, giving people something to point at besides “more forest.”
-
A signature stop at Bean Creek Trestle
The trestle stop is the “big moment”—a chance to stretch, take photos, and make the day feel like a destination rather than a loop.
Put together, those elements explain why WGN bills it as one of its most popular family trips each season.
Final Thoughts
The best heritage-rail experiences don’t require you to be a railfan to enjoy them. The Family Pizza Train succeeds because it offers three things almost every family trip needs:
-
A contained adventure (two hours, predictable timing)
-
A built-in meal (no scrambling for lunch, no negotiating restaurants)
-
Real scenery and a memorable “stop” moment (Namekagon River views + Bean Creek Trestle)
Add the charm of classic equipment and a railroad that’s been family-operated in the region since 1997, and you’ve got an outing that feels distinctly “up north”—equal parts relaxed, scenic, and pleasantly old-school.
