Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Last revised: October 7, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Southern locomotives lettered for the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific used Southern’s own number series. The subsidiary was the lessee of the city of Cincinnati’s railroad from Cincinnati to Chattanooga, and the same practice put CNO&TP initials on cabs, hoods, and switchers that worked that line and the rest of the Southern system. The tables list 317 locomotives. Each one is a unit the Southern compilation assigns to the CNO&TP, or a unit the Electro-Motive builder list sold to the Southern for that subsidiary.

Southern FP7 6146 with the Birmingham Special near Front Royal VA in 1969

Southern FP7 #6146 - a unit sublettered for the CNO&TP - has train 17, the Birmingham Special east of Front Royal, Virginia on September 6, 1969. Roger Puta photo.

Four switchers came onto the CNO&TP by relettering. Four GP9s carry CNO&TP numbers after earlier Southern-family numbers. GP30 2641 was wrecked, and a December 1965 locomotive kept the number. The company story is the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific page. Norfolk Southern still uses many of these road numbers.

Road numbers and subsidiary assignments follow the Southern motive-power compilation at thedieselshop.us, revised November 10, 2022. Electro-Motive serials and order numbers follow Andre Kristopans. Alco construction numbers follow that site’s model rosters. Fairbanks-Morse construction numbers and contract LD179 follow the Train Master roster. GE 44-ton 6010 follows the 44-ton roster. Information compiled October 7, 2026.

Switchers built for the subsidiary

The yard fleet begins with two Alco S1s and three S2s in 1941, a GE 44-tonner in 1945, seven NW2s, and two S4s. Fourteen SW7s arrived in 1950 as 6060–6073 and later carried 1102–1115. The NW2s were built as 6050–6056. After the system renumber into 1044–1085, the Southern compilation’s Note A names twenty-four numbers as CNO&TP-owned: 1045–1047, 1054–1056, 1058, 1061–1062, 1064–1068, 1072–1073, and 1075–1082. The note lists later numbers only. The seven locomotives built as 6050–6056 remain the NW2 row.

Cab units

The first Southern FT set was a pair of Electro-Motive demonstrators sold to the CNO&TP. The builder list keeps the A/B/C/D set numbers. The Southern compilation lists the same six cabs as 6100–6105 and the same six boosters as 6150–6155, and it records booster 6155 as later number 6103B. That renumber is the only set-letter crosswalk either list prints.

F3A 6106–6113, F7A 6114–6120, and FP7 6130–6149 are CNO&TP orders on the builder list. The Southern compilation gives those road numbers and leaves the owner cell blank, while it does tag the matching boosters. The builder’s purchaser is the assignment used here.

Alco RS2s 6206 and 6207 were bought by the Danville & Western and came to the CNO&TP with steam-generator equipment. The RS3 block on the Southern compilation is 6210–6239. Eleven GP7s were built as 6200–6205 and 6240–6244. Nos. 6200 and 6201 were wrecked. Nos. 6202 and 6203 became 8289 and 8290. The other seven survivors were renumbered into 8291–8297. GP9s 6245–6249 were built for the subsidiary. Nos. 6250 and 6251 had been Live Oak, Perry & Gulf 302 and 303. Nos. 6252 and 6253 had been Southern 2500 and 2501.

Five Fairbanks-Morse H24-66 Train Masters, 6300–6304, were the subsidiary’s only FM road locomotives. The Train Master production list, and the Train Master page, give them construction numbers 24L856–24L860 and contract LD179. Twenty-one SD24s followed in the next number block.

Later hood units

GP30s 2630–2634 and 2641–2644 are the CNO&TP slice of a 60-unit Southern order. No. 2640, immediately ahead of them, is an Alabama Great Southern unit on the same order. Wrecked 2641 was replaced in December 1965 by a new locomotive that kept the number and the GP30 designation and rode on a GP35 carbody. Its serial is 31215, order 8072.

Inside the high-nose SD45s 3105–3169, the Southern compilation names three units built for the CNO&TP: 3106, 3168, and 3169. This roster keeps those three. SD40s are 3175–3178. SD40-2s are 3216 and 3231–3240. GP38-2s are the Note C numbers 5028–5033, 5226–5227, 5235–5238, and 5247–5253. Builder orders date those slices to 1972, 1977, and 1979.

GP50s assigned to the CNO&TP are 7039–7069 and 7077–7079. No. 7076 is listed for both the CNO&TP and the Georgia Northern, and the table holds that number for a source that assigns it to one company. Ten GE B23-7s, 4012–4017 and 4019–4022, close the road fleet. No. 4018 is absent from the CNO&TP line of that note. Nine MP15s, 2383–2391, are the late switchers built for the subsidiary.

Relettered from other Southern companies

Three small groups were delivered to other Southern subsidiaries and later lettered CNO&TP. SW1 1002 and SW9 1133 had been Chattanooga Traction Company locomotives. The SW9 had been that company’s No. 5. Both were relettered in 1970. SW1500s 2336 and 2337 were delivered as Chattanooga Traction units in November 1969 and relettered afterward. Their serials sit in the Southern SW1500 order that also produced 2333–2335.
