Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 8, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio dieselized on a short clock. The newest steam on the predecessor Gulf, Mobile & Northern was only a dozen years old when the 1940 merger was signed, and the last revenue steam run came on October 7, 1949. Between those dates the railroad bought Alco freight cabs in quantity, a fleet of F3s, two Baldwin passenger units, and the single diesel Ingalls Shipbuilding ever finished. The second generation was EMD's: GP30s, GP35s, three kinds of GP38, and twenty-one SD40s plus the SD40 demonstrator.

The tables are the all-time road numbers, 406 of them, with the builder's serial and the order or specification beside each batch. The company history is the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio. Gulf, Mobile & Northern steam is its own page, the post-1900 roster.

Passenger cabs, from the boxcab to the Freedom Train

The oldest diesel that reached the GM&O was an Electro-Motive boxcab. In August 1935 the Baltimore & Ohio took 1,800-horsepower No. 50, serial 532, order E127. It went to the Alton in April 1936 for the Abraham Lincoln, became GM&O 1200, and retired in 1956. It is at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, on the Missouri museum list.

The Alton's own E units came with the 1947 merger. EA 52 of the Baltimore & Ohio, serial 668, order E145, June 1937, had become Alton 100A and was rebuilt in March 1953 as GM&O E8A 100A, order 7504, still on serial 668. Seven E7As were numbered 100 and 101–103 with the A suffixes on the 101, 102, and 103 pairs. The Gulf, Mobile & Northern's own passenger cabs were earlier than any of those: Alco DL-107s 270 and 271 in September 1940, serials 69334 and 69335, and DL-109 272 in February 1943, serial 69991. Baldwin added the two cab units 280 and 281 in January 1947, works numbers 71580 and 71581, model DR-6-4-2000.

Alco PA-1s 290 and 291 arrived in November and December 1946, serials 74682 and 74683. No. 292 followed in September 1947, serial 74696, the Alco-GE demonstrator that had carried 1776 on the Freedom Train. On June 23, 1957, PA-1 291 was at St. Louis Union Station beside DL-109 271, E7A 102, and F3A 883-A, the photograph on the company page.

Passenger-cab quantity in this table is 17, counting the boxcab and counting 100A once.

Fifty-five FA-1s, then the F units

The freight cab of the late 1940s was the Alco FA-1. Fifty-five of them, 700–754, were on the property by January 1947, and thirty-seven boosters followed through B37, the last four of those being FB-2s of June 1955. The first three cabs and the first booster were Alco demonstrators: 1500 and 1502 became 700 and 701, and 1501 became B1. The 700s were later reused. After the FA-1s left, GP38s, GP38ACs, and GP38-2s took 701–754 as a second series.

Electro-Motive's share was a 1946–47 block of F3s and a short 1949–50 block of F7s. The F3As are thirty-two road numbers and the F7As are four: 811B, 812A, 812B, and 813A. F3A 881-B, inside the December 1946 order, leads the southbound Ann Rutledge into St. Louis Union Station on June 23, 1957, on the company page. F3A 883-A, order E857, was still in GM&O paint on a Chicago commuter in August 1978, six years after the merger. Several of the suburban cabs later worked in Boston. The serials and orders below are the Kristopans blocks.

One locomotive from Pascagoula

Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Mississippi, laid out a catalog of diesel locomotives at the end of the war and built a single prototype, the model 4-S, in March 1946. It carried demonstrator number 1500, a turret cab, and a Superior marine engine adapted by Cooper-Bessemer. The GM&O, which served the yard, bought it in June 1946 and numbered it 1900. It spent the rest of its life mostly around Mobile, retired in 1966, and was scrapped in 1967. It is the only Ingalls diesel.

Alco road switchers

Road switchers began with the Alton's RS-1s, 50–59, built in 1945 and 1946, and with a longer GM&O series, 1102–1117 and 1120–1127, built from 1944 into 1949. The series skips 1118 and 1119. Five more RS-1s, 1051–1055, came from the Illinois Terminal. Fourteen RS-2s, 1501–1514, followed in 1948 and 1949, and nine RS-3s, 1515–1523, from 1950 through 1952. The RS-2s and RS-3s kept their numbers onto the Illinois Central Gulf. RS-1 1120, at the Tupelo depot in May 1965, is on the company page.

GP30s, GP35s, GP38s, and the SD40s

The 1960s hoods rode on trade-in trucks and arrived in short, repeated orders. Thirty-one GP30s, 500–530, came from December 1962 through September 1963 on orders 7635 and 7666. Serials 27921–27924 belong to another railroad, so 517–519 pick up at 27925. Forty-eight GP35s, 601–648, followed in 1964 and 1965 on orders 7670, 7729, 7764, and 7794.

Twenty GP38s, 701–720, are order 7185, August 1969, serials 35164–35183. Thirteen GP38ACs, 721–733, are split across orders 5766, 7304, and 7388, March through December 1971. No. 727, new at Bloomington on April 3, 1971, is on the company page. Fifteen GP38-2s, 740–754, are order 7351, serials 7351-1 through 7351-15, dated April and August 1972 and ordered as GM&O locomotives. The Illinois Central Gulf merger took effect on August 10, 1972, inside that build window. They became ICG 9560–9574.

Twenty-one SD40s divide into two orders. Nos. 901–912 are 31007–31018, order 7843, March 1966, and 913–921 are 32161–32169, order 7920, September 1966. No. 902 was rebuilt in October 1966 on order 8076, reusing serial 31008. The publicity view of new SD40 906, in March 1966, is on the company page. Ahead of the production engines, EMD demonstrator 434, an SD40 built on an SD35 frame, serial 29025, order 5662, July 1964, became GM&O 950 and then ICG 6071.

The Alton's S-2s became GM&O 10–24, fifteen switchers built in 1944 and 1945. The GM&O's own yard engines in the low 600s and the 1000s were S-1s: 661–664, serials 69386–69389, and 1001–1012, built from 1941 through 1946. No. 24 later worked for Empire Coke under the same number.
