Florida East Coast Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 8, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Florida East Coast dieselized a passenger railroad and then, after the 1963 strike, a fast intermodal one. Two E3s arrived in November 1939. E6s, E7s, and a final five E9s carried the streamliners until July 31, 1968. F3s, a handful of BL2s, and then GP7s and GP9s took the freight. The modern hood fleet was GP40s and GP40-2s, eleven GP38-2s, twenty-two secondhand SD40-2s, and, in the fall of 2014, twenty-four General Electric ES44C4s. Eight SD70M-2s were leased and went back to the lessor.

The tables are the all-time list, with builder serials and order numbers on their own columns. Dates on secondhand rows are the builder's dates. The quantity column totals 227 road numbers. GP40 402 was rebuilt as GP40-2 424, and GP40-2 423 was rebuilt as 437, so two of those numbers are a second identity of a locomotive already in the tables. The company history is the Florida East Coast Railway. Steam is the steam roster.

GP7s and GP9s

Fifteen GP7s came on order 6416 in September and October 1952, built without dynamic brakes. Twenty-six GP9s followed in two orders: 651–666 on order 5373 in November 1954, split across serial blocks 19762–19767 and 19998–20007, and 667–676 on order 5529 in February 1957. GP9 654 is one of the three units in the January 1981 Titusville photograph on the company page.

GP40s, the GP40-2 orders, and eleven GP38-2s

Ten GP40s, 401–410, came from January through March 1971 on order 7278, serials 36773–36782. The new GP40-2s are 411–434, twenty-four locomotives in eight orders, from November 1972 through December 1986. GP40 402, wrecked, was rebuilt as GP40-2 424 on order 797320. GP40-2 423, serial 786169-5, was wrecked and rebuilt as 437, and 437 later went to the New England Central. Those two rebuilds are the same locomotives under a second number. GP40 403, GP40-2 424, and GP9 654 are the Titusville photograph of January 1981.

Twenty-two SD40-2s, eight SD70M-2s, twenty-four ES44C4s

The six-motor EMD fleet on the FEC was secondhand. Twenty-two SD40-2s, 701–722, came largely from the Union Pacific, and the order column is the original EMD order inside the serial. Nos. 703, 711, 713, 714, 715, 716, and 720 wore the Champion paint scheme. No. 703, former Union Pacific 3698, is the Bowden Yard photograph at the top of this page. The compiled roster lists Union Pacific 3766 under both 706 and 710, on serials 796297-48 and 796297-108.

Eight SD70M-2s, 100–107, were lettered for the FEC and returned to the EMD lessor. The shop's lease span for the group runs through 2014. They are in the 227 because they carried FEC numbers. They are off the railroad's own 2026 fleet. The red, white, and blue photograph of No. 107 on the company page is March 29, 2014. The road power Grupo México took over in 2017 includes the twenty-four ES44C4s below. A GE order number for that group was left blank.

Leases, and a museum E8

From 2005 through 2014 the railroad also leased power that stays outside the 227. CITX 140–142 were former EMD demonstrators GM74–GM76, serials 20036552-1 through 20036552-3, built in November 2004, and they were on the property from 2009 through 2014. FURX Geeps and LTEX and PRSX six-motor units ran in the same seasons. Those leases are a group here.

The Gold Coast Railroad Museum displays an E8A, serial 15659, built in June 1952, painted as FEC 1594. The engine is former Conrail 4254, nee Pennsylvania 5794A. It is a museum piece, outside this roster.

Adding the quantity column gives 15 switchers, 23 freight cabs, 31 passenger units, 15 GP7s, 26 GP9s, 10 GP40s, 24 new GP40-2s, 8 secondhand GP40 and GP40-2 road numbers, 11 GP38-2s, 10 GP40-3s, 22 SD40-2s, 8 SD70M-2s, and 24 ES44C4s. That is 227. GP40-2 437 and GP40 2000 are the second numbers of 423 and 406, and they are already inside that total.
